Health Benefits of Seafood

In a recent study published by The New England Journal of Medicine,  researchers found that by eating 8 ounces of seafood a week could greatly reduce your risk of heart disease.

Seafood contains a range of nutrients, including healthy omega-3 fats.  Eating seafood twice a week, including fish and shellfish, can make up the the main protein food on your plate.

To incorporate seafood in your diet, here are some helpful tips so that you eat more fish and shellfish.

Eat a Variety of Seafood
By incorporating a variety of seafood, you can include some that are higher in omega-3 and lower in mercury, such as salmon, trout, oysters, and Alaskan crab legs.

Keep It Lean
Try cooking seafood in methods that don't add extra fat such as grilling, broiling, roasting or baking.  Avoid breading or frying seafood and saturating them in creamy sauces, which add extra calories and fat.  Add extra layers of flavor and texture without adding salt by incorporating spices and herbs such as dill, chili powder, paprika, or cumin and lemon or lime juice.

Shellfish Counts
Shrimp, Oysters, mussels, and clams all supply healthy omega-3s and can help prevent heart disease.  Try shrimp creole, our broiled seafood combo, or our mussels in wine sauce to name just a few.
